Why Retirees Are Choosing The Villages, Florida Over Every Other 55+ Community

If you’ve spent any time researching retirement destinations, one name keeps rising to the top: The Villages, Florida. It’s not an accident.

With more than 130,000 residents and growing, The Villages is the largest 55+ active adult community in the United States — and quite possibly the world. But size alone doesn’t explain why retirees from Kansas City, Chicago, New York, and beyond are packing up their lives and moving here in record numbers.

I know, because I’m one of them.

After 33 years selling homes in the Kansas City metro and helping more than 1,500 families find their perfect place, I made the move to The Villages myself. And what I found exceeded every expectation I had.

What Makes The Villages Different

Most retirement communities offer amenities. The Villages offers a lifestyle. There’s a meaningful difference.

Here, you wake up and choose your day. You might play a round of golf — there are more than 50 executive courses and 12 championship courses, all free to residents. You might hop on your golf cart (the primary mode of transportation here) and cruise to Lake Sumter Landing or Brownwood Paddock Square for live music, dancing, and dinner. You might take a pickleball lesson, join a pottery class, swim laps, or catch a free concert under the Florida stars.

There are more than 3,000 clubs and activities at The Villages. If you can imagine it, there’s probably a club for it.

The Golf Cart Culture

One of the first things visitors notice is that golf carts are everywhere. The Villages has an extensive network of golf cart paths that connect every neighborhood to town squares, shopping, restaurants, healthcare facilities, and recreation centers — all without touching a main road. Many residents drive their golf carts more than their cars.

It’s charming, practical, and one of the features that residents talk about most when they describe daily life here.

The People

Perhaps the most underrated aspect of The Villages is the community itself. People here are active, social, and genuinely happy. There’s an energy that’s hard to describe until you feel it — the sense that everyone around you is living their best chapter.

New residents are welcomed warmly. Making friends is easy. The social fabric of this community is unlike anything I’ve encountered in 33 years of real estate.
